Seamless in Any Irregular Space: A Complete Walkthrough of Customized LED Display Implementation

April 24, 2025

A few years ago, I took on a rather odd job: installing an LED display screen on the geometric concrete wall of an abandoned factory building. Having walked through countless flat and curved screens, the first time I had to challenge a mixture of sawtooth, inclined and curved surfaces, I was both excited and had a headache. The customer’s sentence “I want to have it tailor-made” completely broke my fixed thinking about screen installation and also made me re-understand what a truly Customized LED Display is.

Why can’t ordinary screens satisfy creativity?

I once made a wall facing the wall, a corner of a staircase, and a flowing screen under an overpass. Each project could be accomplished with standard modules. This time, however, the wall angles are diverse and the cross-sectional widths are inconsistent, making any “universal” solution seem fragmented. As soon as the audience stands in the middle, they can see that the seams are crooked like a maze. It was not until I, with a try-it-out attitude, proposed “simply customize the entire screen according to the on-site shape” that I discovered the infinite possibilities.

Three experiences of “mastering customization”

1. Cross-sectional animation of the inclined cultural relic wall
In the branch of the museum, a slanted display wall aims to present the entire process of bronze wares from casting to rusting. My team and I first used a laser scanner to create a three-dimensional model of the wall, and then asked the content team to do UV mapping based on the model. The result is that when the audience looks from above, it is a copper tripod. When they go around to the middle section, it is a smelting furnace. Below, there are rusty patterns, as if they were reading a metal epic.

2. The “Flowing Light Tunnel” in the central bridge corridor of the shopping mall
The corridor space of a certain shopping center is long and narrow. The client wants to use the underside of the bridge to create dynamic effects. I custom-made the LED strips into arc-shaped modules and pasted them on the arched underside at the bottom of the bridge. The pictures unfolded heat maps and fashion short films along with people’s steps. The dazzling and colorful effect attracted many passers-by to stop and take pictures. Many merchants asked us for the route planning map.

3. Immersive experience of the interactive hemisphere
At a digital art exhibition, we used the flexible bare board of visualpower to paint a hemisphere with a diameter of 3 meters. Infrared cameras were installed at the bottom. When the audience moved their hands, their outline silhouettes appeared on the surface of the hemisphere, and the light, shadow and sound effects were all linked together. The atmosphere on the spot was once boiling over, and many people sat on the ground and played for nearly an hour.

The “bloody Lessons” behind Customization

Inaccurate measurement leads to a repeat of the seam disaster
For the first measurement, I only used a tape measure. The result was an error of 5 millimeters, and the modules couldn’t be aligned at all during on-site assembly. Later, I switched to laser scanning and multi-party verification, leaving no expansion joint unchecked.

The heat dissipation design was neglected, and the screen was completely ruined
The fully enclosed back panel starts to show color differences and freeze after just a few minutes of lighting. The picture was saved only after installing air ducts, heat pipes and fans. At that time, in the computer room, only a few of our computers and a few low-noise fans were running “click-click” together.

The content was directly applied, and the entire picture went off track
I was determined to use an anime short film, but after pasting it on the curved surface, the picture was all over the place. The content team worked for three days and three nights, remapping the curved space, and only then did they see “the picture looks like this”.

The maintenance passage was not reserved, and there will be a big drama of wall demolition later
A broken module needs to be dismantled in three rows and the wall has to be broken. That time, after a thorough reflection, I marked the inspection openings on the structural diagram in advance and installed hidden maintenance panels on site.

How can customized projects avoid detours?

1、Precise 3D modeling
It’s not just about taking photos to measure the size. Bring a laser scanner to create a point cloud, or at least use a rangefinder to check multiple times. Every detail must be thoroughly understood.

2、Synchronous design of structure and content
First, build the steel framework, and then do the content UV mapping. The content team gets the actual model for demonstration preview and confirms that there is no distortion before batch rendering.

3、Heat dissipation and maintenance are planned together
Customized modules are often closely attached to the structure. Remember to leave air ducts and inspection openings. The heat dissipation tube pipeline and the fan base should all be drawn into the drawings during the scheme stage.

4、Choose the right modules and accessories
Select the appropriate point spacing and protection level based on the viewing distance and ambient lighting. Modules like visualpower are both flexible and have sufficient brightness, capable of handling the vast majority of harsh environments.

5、On-site debugging and color correction
Don’t just power on and go for the sake of convenience. Be sure to bring a colorimeter and a grayscale board to adjust the color temperature and brightness of each module to the same level.

Conclusion

Treat LED screens and buildings as a puzzle game, and the more you tinker with it, the more interesting it becomes. “Customized LED Display” is not an aloof technical show. Instead, it enables the space and content to be completely integrated on the spot, allowing the audience to be amazed from every Angle. If you are also planning to take the screen into an unconventional form, it is advisable to show sufficient patience and curiosity. Take every step from measurement to debugging seriously, and the result often exceeds your imagination.
